Tucked away in an 18th century mews, in a leafy suburb of Brighton, immaculately pressed indigo jackets, jeans and shirts hang in neat rows in Dawson Denim’s boutique shop. In the workspace beyond, the rat-tat-tat-tat of a vintage industrial sewing machine, one of 11 salvaged from the 1950s and 60s, adds tempo to the working day of Scott Ogden and Kelly Dawson, co-owners of Dawson Denim.
“We cut everything in house using paper and pencil in the traditional manner,” says Scott, wearing a beautiful shirt made from a Kurume Kasuri, is a traditional Japanese yarn-dyed woven fabric. “We love working for ourselves because it gives us the freedom to create what we want. This is our true passion.”
Kelly and Scott source their materials from traditional mills in Okayama, Japan, where salvage denim is woven on Toyoda and Imamura looms. “These fabrics are built to last, and woven in the traditional way,” states Kelly, sat astride a long industrial table in their retail space. “They are high-grade, high quality, and organically dyed using plant Indigo.”
Kelly has worked with denim for over 25 years, and she has an encyclopaedic knowledge of its warp and weft. “I’ve always thought that I didn’t pick denim, denim picked me,” she says. “We were inspired to do this out of love and necessity for great clothing, bearing in mind the importance of sustainability and slow made goods.”

As well as the Type II Jacket, you’ll discover two style jeans; Dawson Denim’s Slim Fit Jeans and Dawson Denim’s Standard Fit Jeans. Both jeans are made from a 14.25oz double indigo organic cotton, red line selvedge denim and feature the same details, including two front and back pockets. However, their distinction lies in the fit: while one style offers a slim fit, the other offers a standard fit.
